Altinkum means 'golden sands" and with its 3 sandy and clean beaches, which gently shelve into the inviting turquoise blue Aegean, you will soon see how the resort got its name. Beach life in Altinkum means there are water sports available and for those who prefer the pace of life a bit slower, you can take a ride out to sea on a pedal boat.
Altinkum is a friendly resort and you will find the locals 'laid back' and relaxed in their attitude towards tourists. You will get to know them quickly and they will enjoy nothing better than chatting over a glass of Turkey's famous apple tea. Don't be surprised if you return year after year to visit your newfound friends! Didim is shaped as a peninsula surrounding Mugla on the east coast with the huge inlet of Akbük town, the Aegean Sea on the west and east coast, Lake Bafa and the Menderes River on the northern coast. From here it is 73 km to Kusadasi and 110 km to Bodrum. The location of today's Didim used to take part around the Apollo Temple at the ancient Didyma town. People of Yenihisar used to go to Söke for their weekly shopping and Akköy used to be the biggest town of those days. But just after tourism, the place itself has turned into a rapidly growing holiday resort for tourists. The unfertile tobacco fields around ancient Didyma became very valuable and the formerly poor owners of those fields are now businessmen (most of them own hotels, restaurants and bars, etc). The name was changed into "Didim" which is the only one of this name in Turkey, including a large area within its borders of the towns and villages leading to the town centre. Today's Didim is a rapidly growing holiday resort quite different than it used to be 10-15 years ago, welcoming large population of tourists with its beautiful beaches, ancient towns, culture, and healthy climate. The local council has improved the infrastructure considerably over the past 5 years with better main roads including a pedestrian promenade for leisurely strolls by the beachfront. A perfect place to relax over a cool drink by the beachside, taking in the beautiful sunsets and watching the world go by! The local market of Didim is held on Saturdays and can be visited by local dolmus transport (minibus) between Altinkum and Didim town centre, which runs every 5 minutes or take a walk for 25 minutes. To discover hidden beaches, natural coves and bays more enjoyably by boat organised daily from the harbour in summer season, which starts beginning of May. Water sports and activities, diving courses and fishing tours are also available. There is a twice-weekly Ferry Boat service going to Bodrum where you will find great shopping and a beautiful marina if you want to mix with the jet set! There are plans afoot to build a Yachting Marina in Didim area which traditionally has resulted in an increased value of overseas property.from mid May to the end September. It is conveniently located making it easily accessible by local dolmus or as part of an organised tour.
